An in-depth look at the course
Emergency First Aid at Work (EFAW) is the one-day, Level 3 qualification that gives a workplace its emergency first aiders. It is the course the Health and Safety (First-Aid) Regulations 1981 point most lower-risk employers towards, and the one we are booked for more than any other. Over a single day at your premises, your nominated people learn to take charge of an emergency, keep a casualty alive and stable, and hand over clearly when the ambulance arrives.
Everything is hands-on. Rather than sit through slides, delegates spend the day practising on manikins and with each other — chest compressions, the recovery position, controlling a bleed — so the skills are close to second nature by the time they leave. Because we come to you, the whole group trains together in the building they would actually respond in, with no travel and minimal time off the floor.

Keeping a casualty alive
- The primary survey using DR ABC
- The recovery position for an unresponsive, breathing casualty
- Adult CPR — high-quality chest compressions and rescue breaths
- Safe use of an automated external defibrillator (AED)
- Recognising and treating choking in an adult
Common workplace emergencies
- Recognising and treating shock
- Controlling external bleeding and dressing wounds
- Managing a seizure safely
- Treating burns and scalds
- Helping with minor injuries — cuts, grazes, splinters and bumps
Who should attend
EFAW suits the majority of lower-risk workplaces — offices, shops, salons, light warehouses, surgeries and similar — where a first-aid needs assessment calls for an emergency first aider rather than the fuller First Aid at Work qualification. It is ideal for nominated first aiders, appointed persons stepping up, and managers who want certified cover on every shift. If your environment carries higher risks such as heavy machinery, chemicals or work at height, the three-day First Aid at Work course is usually more appropriate — and we are happy to advise.
Assessment & certification
There is no exam to revise for. Delegates are assessed throughout the day by continuous practical observation: the trainer watches each person demonstrate the core skills — CPR, the recovery position, managing a bleed — and confirms competence on the day. Everyone who meets the standard receives a Level 3 Award in Emergency First Aid at Work (RQF), accredited by FAIB or Qualsafe and valid for three years. The HSE recommends a short annual refresher in between, which we can also deliver on-site.
How on-site training works
We bring everything needed — training manikins, AED trainers, dressings and all the consumables — to your premises on a date that suits you. All you provide is a room large enough for the group to work on the floor (a meeting room, canteen or cleared warehouse corner is ideal) and a power socket. One fixed fee covers up to 12 people, so the more of your team you certify the better the value, and there is no travel or accommodation for anyone to arrange.
